Show Me The Money!

As the threat of a government shut-down looms, I feel like Dave Ramsey should go to DC and kick some butt.  Maybe Mr. Ramsey will be kind enough to send his book, The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness, to the members of Congress.  There are a few lessons in there they can learn from him.

One question I have is why didn't Congress pass a budget last year?  The Democrats had control of both houses and passing a budget would have been fairly simple compared to "passing" Obamacare.  So why didn't they?  That's a question we really them to answer.  Think about it, what motive did the Democrats have for not passing a budget in October of 2011, the start of the fiscal year 2012?

Well, for starters, it was the October before an election - an election that was very contentious in several states and districts.  According to an article on PolitiFact.com, the 111th Congress convened on Jan. 6, 2009, and exited on Dec. 22, 2010, a period in which the gross federal debt increased from $10.6 trillion to $13.9 trillion, a rise of $3.2 trillion.  My personal belief is the Democrats played politics and didn't pass a budget hoping, in part, to save some seats.  Additionally, I believe they intended to spin the lack-of-a-budget issue and blame the newly elected Tea Partiers..  Chuck Schumer confirmed my suspicions.

My next question, and I hope it is yours also, is will Congress raise the debt ceiling - again.  Right now, the GDP of the USA is $14.1 Trillion (numbers from 2009), according to the World Bank.  As you probably know, $14 Trillion is the magic number because it is also the amount of our debt.  Democrats will tell you that we have plenty of money.  Really?  Where?  Show me the money!!!  That should be our mantra.  Show me the money!  If we have so much of it, where the hell is it?  And why are we using it to pay down our debt?

I implore you to call your Congressperson and Senators this week.  Make some noise and demand the USA get a Total Money Makeover now.  Tick, tock.

Obama Receives a 'Transparency' Award - in a Secret Meeting

On Monday, President Obama was acknowledged by the open government community for his Administration's transparency with the American people.  The meeting praising Obama and his administration was closed and undisclosed to the media, however.  This report from Politico 44 reports that Gary Bass of OMB Watch said, "Our understanding going into the meeting was that it would have a pool photographer and a print reporter, and it turned out to be a private meeting."

What do you think?  Has the president been transparent?
