The Framers of the US Constitution gave us a democratic-republic, "...if we can keep it," as Benjamin Franklin warned Mrs. Powel as he stepped out of the building from the 1787 Constitutional Convention. If we can keep it? He must have realized what a precious, yet delicate system of government they had bequeathed us. By that one statement spoken in response to her question, "Well, Doctor, what have we got?", Ben Franklin showed us that the new United States of America was a vapor in the wind and it required her citizens to be diligent stewards of her.
America was not formed to be governed from the top down. In fact, the opposite is true - the flow of the decisions made regarding our country is to be from the People to the elected officials. So that's why I am doing this Blog. For you...for me...for us! We are the United States of America! We are the People John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson considered when they boldly sought separation from the tyranny of British rule. It is for us that Patrick Henry intrepidly bellowed, "Give me liberty or give me death!" Now, it's our turn to stand up and be counted.
America's future is dim. I think we all can agree on that. A few days ago, I wrote about a question asked to a panel of political pundits, "Is America still relevant?" The scary truth is probably not. Not with our current leadership. Thank God we have an election coming up. So, consider yourself Ben Franklin popping out from the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and your child is Mrs. Powel. The question's the same, "So, what have we got?" After considering the state of our nation - the debt, the manner in which leadership has conducted the country's business in recent history - what's your answer? Think about it...
